2009 June 12 post from skipintro
Early in his campaign, Barack H. Obama said he opposed the Defense of Marriage Act. He faced criticism from the right over that (for example see http://conservativeoasis.com/obama-doma/2009/01/22/ ) but he believed it would get him more votes than he'd lose.
Now, Obama has changed his mind. In a recent California Federal Court challenge filed by a couple legally married in California, the Justice Department, filed a brief saying the couple does not have the right to equal federal benefits. Obama asked for the challenge to be thrown out and stated he supports the DOMA.
What happened? It seems that Blacks have been upset at Obama for not "giving them enough". Just yesterday, the Reverend Jeremiah Wright blamed "the Jews" for keeping him from the President. To blacks Jews==Liberal Elite==Gays. Blacks deny that there are homosexuals within their community. (See the NY Times expose, "Life on the Down Low" )
Nearly 80% of African Americans voted Yes on California Proposition 8. Isn't it odd that in a population where 72% of women give birth out-of-wedock and 1 in 9 black men betwen 18 and 29 are in prison, they care so much about other communites? Barack H. Obama said during the campaign:
"We have more work to do when more young black men languish in prison than attend colleges and universities across America." --Barack Obama, NAACP forum, July 12, 2007.
Liberals tried to explain away the Black vote for Proposition 8, but it's a real phenomonon. But the reason blacks are anti-gay has little to do with a distaste for deviant sexual activity, and more with their victim identity politics.
During the campaign, Obama was clear and unequivical about DOMA.
He gave his full pledge to overturn, or repeal, the federal Defense of Marriage Act, saying:
"I also believe that the federal government should not stand in the way of states that want to decide on their own how best to pursue equality for gay and lesbian couples — whether that means a domestic partnership, a civil union, or a civil marriage. Unlike Senator Clinton, I support the complete repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) – a position I have held since before arriving in the U.S. Senate. While some say we should repeal only part of the law, I believe we should get rid of that statute altogether."
Obama doesn't want to lose the Black vote. So he's throwing them a bone, in the form of the "expendable" homosexual community.
